Volleyball Goes Undefeated in First Day of Tournament

September 4, 2009. Durango, CO. -  The Fort Lewis College Volleyball team loves playing at home after winning their second game of the day against the Broncos of Cal Poly-Pomona in a nail-biting 5 set match 3-2. Still playing withough their captain setter, Melissa Childs, the Skyhawks stepped and came together for a thrilling victory in front of a small yet rowdy crowd.

Fort Lewis dropped the first set 26-28 but rallied and took the second set 25-19. The tension and importance of the game started to build in the third match with both teams trying to play perfection volleyball. The Skyhawks came out on top in the third set 25-22. Fort Lewis had a few chances to close out the match but fell in the fourth set 21-25 when the Broncos rallied in the end. The fifth game looked as if the Broncos had all the momentum but the Skyhawks pulled together and fought for each point in the deciding set. Eventually the Skyhawks pulled out an amazing 15-13 fifth set victory.

The Skyhawks were led again by junior Chelsea Flaming who finished with 22 kills, followed by Jessica Wilson who finished with 19 kills. Adriana Saiz recorded an impressive 47 assists and 11 attacks. Jessica Wilson and Iris Frye led the team in digs with 22 and 15.

The Skyhawks now 2-5 will face the Mountain Lions of UC-Springs tomorrow at 2 p.m for their final game of the Skyhawk Invite.
